Talking about sex, sexual harassment and psychological manipulation can be difficult (and a mouthful) – regardless of the age of your class. And that’s a shame (double entendre intended) because unless WE GO THERE – we won’t equip our students with enough knowledge to help them. A few facts and figures to depress-slash-motivate you: -> 1 in 3 women experience sexual violence in their lifetime. – World Health Organization -> 81% of women and 43% of men report experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetimes. – National Sexual Violence Resource Center -> The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received a total of 98,411 charges alleging harassment under any basis and 27,291 charges alleging sexual harassment (in just three years). If you’re still reading, I’m gonna guess that means you’re ready to be part of the change. Great, us too! Nameless is an immersive training that is designed to help people to identify abuse and open the door to healing. Our aim is to create a safe and educational environment where we can explore the unsafe.

Phase 1: The Film
We start with the 18-minute film. Students watch Nameless where they witness our protagonist in a job interview that starts off really well. Our candidate is prepared and ready to go (just like your brightest students would be…). On paper, there’s nothing wrong with this interview… but it’s what’s unsaid that makes it not okay. We can talk about abuse till we’re blue in the face (pun intended), but there is no definitive alphabet of sexual abuse and harassment; we’ll never succeed in intelligibly defining or describing all of the boundaries of what is okay and not okay. Even the Supreme Court acknowledged in one of its most famous decisions: You will only know it when you see it. And your students will SEE IT in the film. They'll see how subtle this kind of harm can be; it's not always blatant advances but more nuanced ways abuse occurs. Just in case we’re not being EXPLICIT: The film’s aim is to portray subtle forms of abuse, harassment, and manipulation – there’s no nudity, explicit language, nor explicit sexual situations (← this is the point we want to make!). Nameless gives people an understanding of abuse – the kind of abuse that cannot be understood through normal classroom discussion.
Phase 2: The Exercise
How do you integrate learning you can’t even name? Next, students are led through different exercises with the 7 Step Lesson Plan designed to help them understand sexual harassment and psychological manipulation. By sharing and discussing scenarios, individuals develop the skills necessary to identify such behaviors and respond appropriately. The exercise encourages participants to explore alternative approaches, assertiveness, and supportive actions when faced with these challenging situations. We focus on four preventative measures: ●Build Your Awareness ●Set Boundaries ●Identify Manipulation Tactics ●Strengthen Your Identity Classmates get acquainted and understand personal boundaries while identifying problem areas within their own lives – all within the safety of the classroom. In addition, our deep-dive Conversation Starter and Teacher Manual will provide questions and answers to deepen the learning and to provide the background and language you need to lead this important and sensitive training. And your students leave with the tools to realize when something isn't right – and more importantly, what to do if it happens to them.
Phase 3: The Pledge
The film provides a powerful glimpse into the insidious nature of harassment; the exercise reminds our students that they are not alone and equips them with the knowledge to respond effectively. However, we recognize that a single event cannot cover all aspects of abuse prevention. That's why we believe it's crucial to provide our students with a unique tool to hold fast to these new lessons… …which is why we conclude the day by making a pledge. "By making this pledge, we strive to break the cycle where today's victim becomes tomorrow's abuser. It's about empowering ourselves to make a positive difference and contribute to a safer, more respectful society. In taking this pledge, we also encourage self-forgiveness for any actions we may have contributed to a situation or any inaction we regret. We are not alone in this journey and commit to taking action towards healing and promoting positive change. If something doesn't feel right - whether it concerns us or someone else - we will have the confidence to bring it to someone’s attention who could make a difference (e.g. professor / teacher, advisor, therapist). We can do this!" By embracing this ongoing pledge, our graduating students are invited to truly follow through with what they have learned and to confidently apply it in their lives as they move forward. It's about empowering our students to make a positive difference and create a safer, more respectful society for all.
